Letter grade scale (editable)

Minimum percent for each letter. Change it to match your syllabus — results update live.

How it works: each category's percent is its points earned ÷ points possible (a bare 92 counts as 92/100). The course grade is Σ(weight × category %) ÷ Σ weight over categories with scores. Needed on final = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight.

This grade calculator handles weighted grading the way most syllabi describe it: enter each category (homework, quizzes, labs, midterm) with its weight and your scores, and it shows your current percentage and letter grade. The final exam section then works backwards to the score you need to finish with any target grade, with a table covering every letter on your scale, so you know exactly what is at stake before exam week.

The letter scale is editable, and scores can be typed as points or percentages. Once your course grades are in, the GPA calculator turns them into a weighted or unweighted GPA. For quick one-off conversions, the percentage calculator helps, and the countdown timer keeps timed practice exams honest. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. The formula behind the final exam section, with worked examples and what happens when weights don't add up, is in what do I need on my final?

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Work out your percentage in each category, multiply it by the category's weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. If homework is 20 percent at 90, quizzes 30 percent at 80, and the midterm 50 percent at 70, your grade is (20 × 90 + 30 × 80 + 50 × 70) ÷ 100 = 77. The calculator does this live, and shows how many points each category contributes so you can see where your grade is coming from.

What do I need on my final exam?

Use the formula needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a fraction. With an 85 current grade, a final worth 25 percent, and a target of 80, you need (80 − 85 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 65. The calculator also lists the score needed for every letter grade on your scale, flags anything above 100 as not reachable without extra credit, and tells you when a grade is already locked in.

How should I enter my scores?

Type them into each category separated by commas, spaces, or semicolons. Points work as fractions such as 18/20 or 45/50, and a plain number or percentage such as 92 or 92% is read as 92 out of 100. Within a category, points are pooled — total earned divided by total possible — which is how most gradebooks compute a category average. Extra credit above the maximum, like 22/20, is allowed. Anything the calculator cannot read is listed under the row.

What if my category weights don't add up to 100%?

The calculator warns you when the weights do not add up either way: it accepts category weights that total 100 percent on their own, or that reach 100 percent once the final exam weight is added, and flags anything else. Your current grade is averaged only over the categories that have scores, with their weights scaled up to fill the whole, which is the standard way to report a mid-semester grade. That means an empty final-exam category does not drag your current grade down to zero. Double-check the syllabus if the total is off, since a typo there changes everything. Weights can include decimals, such as 12.5.

Can I change the letter grade scale?

Yes. Open the letter grade scale panel under the calculator to edit the minimum percentage for each letter, add letters, or remove them — useful if your class uses a 90/80/70 scale without plus and minus grades, or a pass/distinction system. The current letter and the needed-on-final table update immediately. The default is the common US scale: 97 A+, 93 A, 90 A−, 87 B+, 83 B, 80 B−, and so on down to 60 for a D−. Reset to default restores it at any time.
